Protect and Revitalise Historic High Town Road in Luton

Protect and Revitalise Historic High Town Road in Luton
The Issue
Let’s make High Town Road a beautiful historic high street that Lutonians can be proud of.
High Town Road is one of the most historic and distinctive streets in Luton. With its Victorian terraces, traditional shopfronts and strong links to Luton's famous hat making heritage, it is a unique part of our town's identity.
For many residents, High Town has always had a special character. It is a place full of history, local businesses and community spirit. Yet today, many people feel that this beautiful historic street has not received the attention and investment it deserves.
Major regeneration funding is currently being directed toward Luton's town centre. While investment in the town is welcome, High Town Road must not be left behind.
High Town Road sits within the High Town Conservation Area and is recognised as an area of historic importance. It has also been identified as being at risk by Historic England. This makes it even more important that steps are taken to preserve and revitalise the area.
With the right support, High Town Road could become a thriving heritage high street that celebrates Luton's history and brings new life to the area. Even modest and well planned improvements could make a huge difference.
Imagine a High Town Road with:
• Restored historic façades and traditional shopfronts
• Beautiful paving, lighting and street features that reflect the area's character
• Independent artisan shops such as bakers, florists, tailors, butchers, cafés and bridal boutiques
• Businesses celebrating Luton's heritage, including hat shops or hat making workshops
• A welcoming street that residents feel proud of and visitors enjoy exploring
High Town Road is also located right next to Luton railway station, meaning it is one of the first places many visitors see when arriving in our town. It has the potential to become a wonderful gateway to Luton.
Across the country, historic high streets have been revitalised through heritage led regeneration. Funding programmes such as those supported by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund have helped towns restore their historic centres while supporting local businesses and communities.
We believe High Town Road could benefit from similar support.
This petition asks our MP Rachel Hopkins, together with local councillors James Taylor and Umme Ali and Luton Borough Council, to support initiatives that will protect and revitalise High Town Road.
Specifically, we ask that they consider:
• Allocating part of the regeneration funding toward improvements in High Town Road
• Exploring heritage funding opportunities available nationally
• Supporting initiatives that restore the historic character of the street
• Helping High Town Road become a thriving heritage high street once again
As residents and supporters of High Town, we simply want to see this special part of Luton flourish.
High Town Road has the potential to become one of the most charming and vibrant historic streets in our town. With the right vision and support, it could once again be a place of pride for the whole community.
If you love Luton, care about its history, and want to see High Town Road restored and celebrated, please sign this petition and show your support.
Together we can help ensure that High Town Road becomes a historic high street that Lutonians can truly be proud of.
