Protect Alligators from Exploitation for Luxury Goods

The Issue

Alligator populations in the United States have made a remarkable recovery.

Once endangered, American alligators are now considered a species of “Least Concern,” in part due to a system in Louisiana that allows farmers to raise alligators for meat and skins while releasing some back into the wild.

This success story matters.

But it also raises an important question: should conservation depend on turning wildlife into a commercial product?

Today, hundreds of thousands of alligators are farmed each year, with their skins used for luxury goods. While this system has helped sustain populations, animal welfare advocates are raising serious concerns about the ethics of raising and killing wildlife for profit.

There are also concerns that growing demand for alligator skins could contribute to illegal poaching, undermining conservation efforts rather than supporting them.

Conservation and ethics should not be in conflict.

Protecting a species should also mean protecting the well-being of the animals themselves.

We call on Louisiana wildlife authorities, federal regulators, and industry leaders to strengthen oversight of alligator farming. This includes clear and enforceable animal welfare standards, transparency in farming and harvesting practices, and stronger protections against illegal trade.

If wildlife conservation is tied to commercial use, it must be done responsibly.

The recovery of the alligator should be something to celebrate. But it should not come at the cost of humane treatment or ethical standards.

We can protect species without compromising our values.

Sign this petition to demand stronger protections, greater transparency, and ethical standards in alligator farming.
