Petition Statement:
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Alberta to stop the forced transition of Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) recipients into the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP).
The ADAP program represents a harmful rollback of essential supports:
- $200/month less than AISH, despite inflation and rising costs of living.
- At Alberta’s current minimum wage ($16/hour), an Albertan would need to work 12.5 additional hours each month just to make up for this loss.
- Reduced earning exemptions: AISH allowed recipients to earn up to $1,072/month before clawbacks began, on a sliding scale. ADAP slashes this to only $700/month, punishing those who try to work — even though the program claims to “encourage employment.”
- Forced reapplication for benefits, creating unnecessary stress and risk for vulnerable people.
- No appeals process, leaving applicants with no recourse if denied.
- And now, after the federal government created the Canadian Disability Benefit ($200/month), the Alberta government chose to claw it back dollar-for-dollar, instead of letting disabled Albertans benefit from this much-needed support. This clawback cost Alberta nothing, but cost people with disabilities everything.
Albertans with disabilities deserve security, dignity, and fair treatment — not cuts and uncertainty.
We demand that the Government of Alberta:
- Halt the transition from AISH to ADAP.
- The cancellation of ADAP.
- Maintain existing AISH benefit levels and earning exemptions.
- Guarantee an appeals process for all disability assistance applicants.
Albertans with disabilities already face significant barriers. Reducing their supports is unjust, counterproductive, and harmful.
This petition will be presented to Danielle Smith: Premier of Alberta and Leader of the United Conservative Party and Jason Nixon: Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, as well as other members of the Alberta Legislature.
In addition to this online petition, there’s also a paper petition you can download, print, and mail back with signatures. The paper petition is especially important because it carries real weight in the Alberta Legislature.
The online petition demonstrates public support, helps raise awareness of the issue online, and can catch the attention of media and other influential people.
By signing both, you strengthen the impact of this effort—helping us be heard both online and in the halls of government.
