The issue

When Qantas faced media scrutiny and regulatory pressure, they promised a full refund—only to quietly backtrack and penalize everyday passengers with unfair 'no-show' fees the moment the headlines faded.

My family faced an enormous emotional and financial burden due to the insensitivity of Qantas Airways during a critical moment of grief. After the unexpected passing of my mother, we were forced to travel urgently to her funeral. In this time of deep sorrow, the last thing we anticipated was an insurmountable hurdle at the Qantas counter.

Despite our clear communication and the urgency of our travel, we were turned away for what Qantas termed a 'no-show.' This occurred despite our attempts to resolve what should have been a routine two-minute procedure at check-in. We incurred an overwhelming financial loss of $8,898.31, money that was intended to honor my late mother and support us during this trying time.

This is not just about money; it’s about the inherent lack of empathy and the failure to perform basic customer service tasks by Qantas staff during travel. Their actions added significant stress at an unimaginable time, exacerbating our grief.

Despite arriving at the Mackay Airport Qantas check-in counter well before departure, we were refused boarding passes by the check-in operator over an online health declaration form. The form takes less than two minutes to complete online, but the agent flatly refused to grant us those two minutes, stated "Your agent should have informed you beforehand," and walked away—denying us service on the spot.

This arbitrary refusal caused extreme emotional distress and forced us to spend nearly $11,000 AUD on emergency replacement flights to reach India in time for the funeral.

To make matters worse:

No official written refusal was provided. Instead, Qantas logged our booking as a "No-Show," misrepresenting our physical presence at the counter.
The requirement was completely inconsistent: Subsequent flight legs and cabin crew on later flights handed out health forms on board or did not request them at all.
Both the booking agency and Qantas are passing responsibility back and forth, leaving a grieving family to bear an unjust $9,000 loss during a time of mourning.

Qantas and Pricebeat Travel backtracked on their full refund promise once media pressure dropped. I know everyday people can't do much against massive companies like this, but I wanted to share this anyway to bring it to light. Thanks again for your help. In a recent email, Qantas said they'll now only offer $1,600—the same partial "no-show" amount.

This justification exposes a glaring and suspicious operational inconsistency across Australia’s aviation network. Out of all domestic and international hubs—including major gateways like Brisbane International Airport—the Qantas operator at Mackay Airport was the only one enforcing a strict mandate to submit this specific health declaration. Standard procedures across the rest of the country contained no such requirement. Treating a single-airport anomaly as grounds to declare paying passengers a "no-show" and deny a legitimate refund is utterly unreasonable. Furthermore, the deliberate actions of the Qantas Mackay operator strongly suggest this was done intentionally, operating under local instructions or back-end support while knowing higher regulatory authorities would be unlikely to hold them accountable.

Compounding this issue, the third-party agency Pricebeat Travel has completely cut off communication, ignored our calls, and engaged in alarming financial practices. Despite our tickets being purchased in Australian Dollars (AUD), transaction records reveal that the agency altered the billing structure and routed payments through India in foreign currency channels. Processing local AUD payments through offshore financial channels before dodging customer support raises immediate red flags for deceptive financial practices operating in plain sight without regulatory oversight.

This experience directly mirrors Qantas’s documented track record of systemic anti-consumer behavior and deceptive ticketing practices. Official ACCC findings established that Qantas continued selling tickets on over 8,000 canceled flights for weeks after canceling them, delayed notifying ticket holders on over 10,000 flights for an average of 18 days, and impacted 70% of canceled flights during peak disruption periods through delayed notifications or ongoing sales. Qantas exploited the prospect of news coverage to signal public cooperation, only to quietly revert to penalizing passengers once they believed media scrutiny had passed.

What We Are Requesting:

Qantas Management review the Mackay Airport CCTV footage, Correct the improper "No-Show" classification to accurately reflect that service was refused at the desk.
Issue a fair refund for the original booking
Ensure check-in staff are trained to show basic duty of care, and empathy.
