We are generational farmers in the South West, deeply rooted in the fertile soils of Margaret River, Western Australia. Our love for farming isn't just a profession—it's our way of life and we want to pass this legacy on to our children and grandchildren. However, the future of agriculture is under threat due to local government legislation that seeks to control land use and enforce rewilding.

Our agricultural lands are not just plots of earth; they are vital sources of food security for Australians. They represent an essential part of our national identity and economy. According to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARES), agriculture contributed $61 billion or 2.3% towards Australia's GDP in 2019-20.

We urge lawmakers to protect all farming land currently zoned Priority Agriculture from any form of encroachment by environmental expectations or regulations that may compromise their productivity or viability. Furthermore, we propose that lands currently zoned General Agriculture be re-zoned as Priority Agriculture.

This action will ensure long-term protection for these invaluable resources, allowing us—and generations after us—to continue providing food security for Australians while preserving our cherished way of life.
