So, my son and I watched Just Mercy for the first time last night. Watching When They See Us a few months ago hit hard, but Just Mercy was a truly emotional experience for me, because my husband was also wrongfully convicted in Alabama and is currently housed in the Alabama Department of Corrections. Although this true story’s journey began in 1987, not much has changed with the lack of regard and unfairness Black men face in Alabama’s criminal justice system. To put this in perspective, the movie starts out with Bryan Stevenson’s family worrying about his move to Alabama because of a lynching that occurred in Mobile only 7 years prior. My husband, Leonard, was falsely convicted in Mobile in January 2012, almost 10 years ago. If you have not yet seen this movie and are interested in the experiences of people like my husband, this film is a must-see. Before I go, I ask that you please consider signing, sharing, posting and raising awareness for my husband’s case, so that we can hit that next goal of 7,500 signatures together, with the end goal of putting pressure on Alabama’s government to release this innocent man back to his wife and family. Much love and many thanks, Mrs. Coleman <3
