Prosecute the Palisades Fire Suspect to the Fullest Extent of the Law
The Issue
The Palisades Fire was one of the most devastating wildfires in Los Angeles history — and now, we know it was allegedly started by one man.
Twelve people lost their lives. Homes were destroyed. Families were forced to flee in the middle of the night as flames tore through their neighborhoods. And according to federal authorities, this entire tragedy began with a deliberate act of arson.
Federal prosecutors allege that Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old former Uber driver, maliciously started the Lachman Fire on January 1, which smoldered underground for days before erupting — fueled by high winds — into the deadly Palisades Fire. He has been arrested and charged with destruction of property by means of fire.
Authorities say Rinderknecht filmed himself near the ignition site, took photos, and fled the area after unsuccessfully trying to call 911. He later followed fire trucks and recorded the blaze he’s accused of setting. Investigators have ruled out all other causes.
Now, we are calling on the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California and the Department of Justice to ensure that this case is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law — with no leniency or plea deals that fail to reflect the gravity of this tragedy.
We demand:
- A full criminal trial, with transparency and public accountability
- Maximum sentencing if Rinderknecht is convicted
- Clear communication with victims and the affected community
- No dismissal or reduction of charges in exchange for a plea
Twelve lives were lost. Countless others were upended. The scale of destruction — and the trauma left behind — cannot be erased. But it can be honored by pursuing justice with the seriousness this case demands.
The people of Los Angeles deserve to know that preventable tragedies like this will never be met with a slap on the wrist. A message must be sent: reckless disregard for human life and safety will be met with full legal consequences.
Sign now to demand full prosecution in the Palisades Fire case. Justice delayed cannot become justice denied.
