Propose “Faith’s Law” for stiffer penalties on PSWs falsifying visits
The Issue
On January 11th, 2024, a personal support worker (PSW) falsely claimed to have visited my dear fiancée, Faith Girvan, at her apartment. To our heartbreak and disbelief, autopsy reports revealed that Faith had tragically passed away on January 8th, 2024. This incident highlights a disturbing loophole in the current system which allows PSWs to falsify wage claims without immediate or significant repercussions. To honor Faith’s memory and prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies, we must take action.
I am proposing new Federal Legislation, aptly named "Faith's Law," to enforce stricter penalties on PSWs who fraudulently claim to have seen their clients. The law would establish a comprehensive system of sanctions to ensure accountability and deter fraudulent behavior:
- For a first offense, a strict warning would be coupled with mandatory retraining.
- A second offense would incur a $3,000 fine and a 90-day suspension of the PSW's license.
- A third offense should result in the permanent revocation of their license.
Moreover, PSW agencies would be required to implement verification procedures, such as contacting clients to confirm their appointment status with respective PSWs. By creating a more transparent and accountable system, we can protect vulnerable individuals who rely on honest and diligent care.
Personal support workers are entrusted with the safety and well-being of some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Fraudulent behavior not only undermines this trust but can also have severe consequences, as was heartbreakingly evident in Faith’s case.
We need to ensure that those tasked with providing care are held to the highest standard of integrity and accountability. Join me in urging lawmakers to introduce "Faith's Law" to prevent future injustices and ensure that no family has to suffer such a painful loss due to deceit and negligence.
Please sign this petition and help us advocate for change that will secure greater protection, honesty, and professionalism in the care provided by PSWs across the nation.
