Propel Western Sydney University to Improve Accessibility for Vision Impaired Students

The issue

Every day, students with vision impairments at Western Sydney University (WSU) face unnecessary barriers. Currently, these students are given no other choice but to use the ramp, as the university's front steps aren't equipped with features conducive to their accessibility. These include important safety markers such as a contrasting stripe or tactile paving often used to assist individuals with vision impairments.

The university is required to adhere to the Work Health and Safety Act (2011) and the Work Health and Safety Regulation (2017). This includes adding a slip-resistant nosing of a contrasting colour to ensure visibility and safety in all lighting conditions. Achieving this will significantly enhance campus accessibility and safety.

It's high time our university gets on board with global standards and implement changes to make the campus inclusive for all students. The WSU steps should not be a hurdle but a symbol of the forward strides we make in our university journey. Seeking equality for all students, we urge Western Sydney University to make their facilities, including their front steps, more accessible to our colleagues with vision impairments. Please sign this petition and join our call for a more inclusive WSU.
