I am a proud member of a federally recognized tribe, the Oglala Lakota/Arikra. For generations, my people and countless other indigenous communities from Alaska to Central America have been marginalized, overlooked, and subjected to systemic injustices. Despite being the original stewards of these lands, our treaties have been disregarded, our sacred rights ignored, and our voices silenced.

Across the Americas, indigenous peoples continue to face illegal apprehensions, with families being painfully separated and children inexplicably placed in cages. This cruel reality is a clear violation of human rights and an affront to the dignity of all indigenous nations.

In addition to these injustices, the rightful return of our ancestral lands, or #landback, is essential. This movement is not just about land; it is about justice, restitution, and healing. Our lands hold our histories, cultures, and spiritual connections. Recognizing this is integral to acknowledging the profound bond indigenous peoples have with our environments and ultimately, honoring our role as protectors of these territories.

Furthermore, it is crucial for the legal system to enact laws that safeguard our communities, cultures, histories, and identities. This means upholding the treaties steadfastly and implementing protections to prevent further injustices. The acknowledgment of our contributions and existence is not only overdue but fundamental in shaping an equitable and inclusive society.

It is time for change, for justice, and for recognition. We must urge governments to overturn the systemic inequalities that have plagued indigenous peoples for far too long.
