Prohibit Young Jeezy's Performance at the Oakland Arena

The Issue

Oakland, a city renowned for its rich culture, artistry, activism, and city pride, faces a potential threat. Young Jeezy, who is slated to perform at the Oakland Arena on August 10, 2024, has unsettling links to violence. Gun violence is already a prevalent issue in our community, and we cannot afford to ignore the risks associated with welcoming a figure that seems to be involved with multiple incidence of violence.

  • Domestic Violence Accusations: Young Jeezy has faced allegations from his estranged wife, Jenny Mai, regarding domestic violence.
  • Past Criminal Charges: In 2014, he was accused of assaulting his own son, among other charges.
  • Involvement in Violent Incidents: Witnesses have linked him to various violent events, including the shooting of Oakland resident and native, Promoter Eric Johnson II at the Shoreline Amphitheater in 2014.

Inviting Young Jeezy to perform at a high-profile city event could inadvertently endorse harmful behaviors and send the wrong message to our residents, particularly our youth, who should be encouraged to reject violence in all forms.

We comprehend the importance of artistic freedom, but potential safety issues should not be overlooked in favor of entertainment. An artist with a history of violence and criminal charges can inadvertently harm the community's reputation that we are working so hard to re-build and maintain. Therefore, we're calling upon the City of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Oakland City Council, all Oakland City leaders, KMEL and organizers of the Oakland Arena event to reconsider their invitation to Young Jeezy.

Let's preserve the safety, peace, and reputation of our city. Sign this petition to ban Young Jeezy from performing at the Oakland Arena on August 10, 2024.
