We are a group that is deeply concerned about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in misleading the public during recent political campaigns in the United Kingdom.

During the latest elections, a right-wing political organisation got away with using fake AI images to share misleading information with voters. These kind of practices are further putting the credibility and integrity of British politics at incredible risk.

AI-created images can create a false narrative which, when unleashed on the public, can be used for various unscrupulous reasons. While artificial intelligence may have its merits across different technological sectors, its use in distorting reality and manipulating public opinion for political gains is unacceptable.

In the world of politics, where public trust and transparency should be held paramount, the deployment of AI to create distorted truths can potentially lead to a break-down of societal cohesion.

Statistics according to an Oxford University study show that voters find it difficult to discern between real and fake news as up to 90% of voters do not cross-check the information they consume. This adds yet another layer of complexity and risk to the issue.

By signing this petition, we are asking for the matter to be debated in Parliament with a resolve in the creation of laws to forbid the use of AI in creating or manipulating political literature for every registered political candidate or organisation. The aim of any new law/s would be to protect the integrity of British politics, and afford every UK citizen the right to unbiased and truthful information.
