Having served in the emergency services, I have witnessed firsthand the intense dedication, resilience, and bravery displayed by those who work tirelessly to keep us safe. Every day, emergency service workers risk their lives to rescue, protect, and support the public. Yet, their jobs are being made increasingly difficult—and potentially dangerous—due to unauthorized recordings by bystanders.

In the age of smartphones, where anyone can record and instantly share content online, the personal lives and professional activities of emergency service members are being exposed without their consent. These unauthorized recordings not only invade their privacy but also distract from the critical tasks at hand, potentially placing both the emergency personnel and those in need of help at greater risk.

Statistics have shown a marked increase in public recordings in recent years. A 2022 survey by National Emergency Services Association revealed that over 67% of emergency workers reported feeling inhibited and distracted due to being recorded on scene. Furthermore, 45% noted incidents where unauthorized recordings directly interfered with operations.

While we acknowledge the importance of transparency and accountability, it should not come at the cost of safety and efficiency. Major news organizations—bound by ethical standards and equipped with the resources to present footage responsibly—should remain the exclusive entities authorized to document these situations. This would ensure a balanced coverage that respects the dignity and privacy of professional responders while keeping the public informed.

We propose making it illegal for individuals and smaller parties to film emergency services during active operations unless they have explicit permission or demonstrate that their presence does not disrupt the immediate operation. This legislation would allow our emergency service workers to operate without distractions and undue pressure, ensuring they can focus on what truly matters—saving lives.
