Prohibit the Use of Flock Safety ALPR Cameras in Michigan

The Issue

I am a concerned resident of the state of Michigan whose privacy, alongside thousands of others, is jeopardized by the Flock Safety ALPR Cameras. These cameras, installed in our neighborhoods, are perpetually collecting extensive data on innocent citizens without our consent. It's alarming to realize that our everyday movements can be tracked, leading to potential misuse and abuse.

To draw a clear picture of this issue, ALPR Cameras can produce up to a hundred million records each week, registering license plates, route information, and the time of every single vehicle passing by (ACLU). According to a report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, out of the dozens of American law enforcement agencies using ALPRs, not a single one reported that they had found criminal use of these detailed logs of public movement.

The risks of data misuse, profiling, increased surveillance, and the gradual erosion of our right to privacy are far too high a price to pay. Strikingly, a 2013 report by the Boston Police Department Inspector General found that ALPR data was accessed for personal use, strikingly revealing how this technology can be abused.

Michigan's citizens should not have to live under the specter of such invasive surveillance. Hence, I urge you to join me in pushing for an outright ban on the use of Flock Safety ALPR Cameras in Michigan. Only with sufficient public pressure can we safeguard our fundamental rights to privacy and freedom. Please sign this petition.
