Prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude in Ohio

The Issue

Article I, Section 6 of the Ohio Constitution explicitly states that "there shall be no slavery in this state; nor involuntary servitude, unless for the punishment of crime."

In the 21st century, it is unconscionable to tolerate any form of slavery, irrespective of the circumstances. Using slavery as a punishment not only perpetuates racial injustice and systemic inequality but also insidiously undermines the moral fabric of our society.  It is imperative that we move towards more humane and rehabilitative forms of "punishment", ones that align with modern principles of justice and human rights.

Recent data from advocacy organizations reveal that states which have abolished such practices in their constitutions have witnessed positive outcomes in their justice systems, showing a shift towards more rehabilitative approaches. To follow suit, Ohio must embrace change by amending its constitution to unequivocally ban slavery and involuntary servitude under all conditions.

By amending the Ohio Constitution to remove the exception clause, we can take a huge step towards building a fairer, equitable and just society. This change would not only bring Ohio in line with global human rights standards, but it will also foster a justice system that prioritizes dignity and rehabilitation over punishment and oppression.

We call upon the Ohio State Legislature to pass H.J.R. 5 and amend this obsolete provision of the state’s constitution.  In doing so, Ohio can reaffirm its commitment to justice and equality for all citizens.

Join us in advocating for a modern, equitable Ohio. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude as a criminal penalty.
