The Issue

I have been personally affected by the sale of kratom and 7 OH products at gas stations in Washington. A couple of years ago, I started using these easily accessible products without fully understanding the potential consequences. Despite multiple attempts to stop, including going through detox and treatment programs, I found it nearly impossible to quit when these substances are so readily available everywhere I turn. Their presence in nearly every gas station across the state makes it incredibly difficult to avoid, even while simply filling my car with gas.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique. Many individuals in Washington, including young people, are falling prey to these readily available but unregulated substances. Kratom and similar products are not regulated by the FDA, which means their safety and efficacy are not confirmed, putting consumers at risk of potentially serious health issues. Moreover, the lack of regulation provides easy access to these products by minors, posing an even greater danger to our youth.

In various parts of the United States, the sale of kratom has already been restricted or banned due to growing concerns about its safety and potential for abuse. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) attempted to temporarily classify kratom as a Schedule I substance, indicating a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, although the decision was later withdrawn pending further investigation. However, the risks associated with kratom are well-documented, with reports of addiction, withdrawal symptoms, and even cases of contamination with dangerous pathogens.

We need to protect our communities and especially our children from the potential harm caused by these substances. I urge lawmakers in Washington to adopt similar measures as other states and prohibit the sale of kratom and 7 OH products in gas stations, where supervision and regulation are minimal.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for the health and safety of our community. Please join me in calling for a ban on the sale of kratom and 7 OH products in gas stations throughout Washington. Your support can drive the change we so desperately need. Let's work together to protect our friends, families, and especially our youth from the dangers of these unregulated substances.
