Prohibit Oversized Four Wheel Drive Vehicles
The issue
Oversized four-wheel drive vehicles pose serious concerns.
Oversized four-wheel drive vehicles’ excessive size, which often exceeds standard vehicle dimensions, directly contributes to increased road congestion.
Oversized four-wheel drive vehicles are responsible for higher carbon footprints, given their poor fuel efficiency and higher CO2 emissions. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, four-wheel drive vehicles consume nearly 20% more fuel on average than other car types. Many of these vehicles are being dumped on Australia’s shores because of our poorer vehicle emissions standards.
Their disproportionate size also raises safety issues for other road users, particularly pedestrians, cyclists and drivers of small vehicles.
It's time action happens on this issue to alleviate the traffic stress our communities bear, reduce environmental impact, and ensure safer roads for all.
What I personally have found, and am finding more and more, is that many drivers of these vehicles are taking risky, irresponsible actions and driving dangerously on our roads.
On Tuesday March 5, 2024 I was dangerously tailgated by a white Toyota Landcruiser near the Lilydale Airfield in Yering.
On Thursday March 8, 2024 I was dangerously tailgated and abused by a speeding large black RAM Ute [JBP-001] on the Eastern Freeway near Bulleen.
On Thursday June 20 2024 I was dangerously tailgated and high-beamed by a large white Ute [IZJ 6HG or 1ZJ 6HG] on the Melba Hwy near Castella.
There have several other similar incidents in this year alone. I’m certainly not the only one and I want it to end. I want to feel safe on our roads, and we all deserve to feel safe!
These vehicles (mobile weapons) weigh anywhere between 1.5 to 2.5 tonnes and any resultant crash is more likely to be deadly.
This is a political, legislative, commercial, judicial and climate issue.
Join me in calling for a ban on oversized four-wheel drive vehicles.
