Prohibit Municipal Incineration in Pennsylvania

The Issue

Many people in our community have experienced the first-hand detrimental effects of living near municipal incinerators. A day doesn’t go by without someone voicing their exasperation, "I hate them, they smell so bad," a sentiment shared by others across Pennsylvania. But the issues with incineration extend far beyond the unpleasant smell. The toxins those facilities release every day contaminate our air and oceans, posing a significant threat to our environment and health.

Agriculture, a crucial part of Pennsylvania's economy, is not spared either as the pollution also impacts crop yields. But what is perhaps the most disheartening aspect of the whole issue is the insidious strategy employed in the location of these facilities. These incinerators are usually set up in low-income neighborhoods, disproportionately affecting those who have the least means to move away or fight back.

Unlike landfills where waste eventually degrades, incineration prolongs the existence of pollution, causing it to pose a threat in perpetuity. We must curtail this unsustainable method of waste management that continually erodes our quality of life. By banning municipal incineration, we can pave the way for utilizing more sustainable and less harmful waste disposal alternatives.

We, residents of Pennsylvania, urge you to put our health, environment and future generations first. Help us turn the tide against these destructive practices and make Pennsylvania a cleaner, safer place to live. Please sign this petition and support the fight to ban municipal incineration.
