Prohibit Mandatory Overalls in Workshops During Severe Heat, Except for Hazardous Chemical Handling
The Issue
As a long-time workshop employee, I have experienced firsthand the effect of the heat in our work facility. The temperatures routinely climb above 25 degrees Celsius, and the mandatory requirement for all staff to wear full overalls all day is leading to severe health complications. Our members are contracting heat stroke, fainting, and facing other grave health risks.
Workshops nationwide are imposing this uniform policy, regardless of the nature of the job or the working conditions. It is crucial to address this issue, not just for the workers in my workshop, but all others facing the same struggle across the country.
According to a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, exposure to a hot environment can result in a variety of heat-induced disorders including heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Moreover, workers who are required to do heavy physical labor or to wear heavy protective clothing are at even higher risk for these heat-related health issues.
Our demand is simple: implement a nationwide requirement for workshops to prohibit the mandatory use of overalls during periods of intense heat, unless said overalls are needed for protection against dangerous chemicals. This would allow management to prepare reasonable alternatives for employees, such as lighter clothing or occasional rest breaks, consequently improving working conditions and mitigating health risks.
With this in mind, we request your urgent attention to this matter. It's time we stand together and assert our right to safer, healthier working conditions. Please sign this petition today to protect the workers in our country's workshops.
