Prohibit Landlords from Banning Pets in Rental Properties

The Issue

I'm a tenant who deeply cherishes the joy a pet can bring to a home. However, many landlords forbid their tenants from owning pets, linking pets to the potential damage they may cause to carpets or furniture. Yet, from experience, I can say that more health hazards are posed, not by pets, but by things like mouldy carpets or neglected repairs, which landlords often dismiss or side-line.

In considering this issue, it is important to pose the question: Are pets truly a problem for the rented homes or is their prohibition a misconstrued perception? Researches repeatedly confirm that companion animals can play an essential role in a person's well-being, providing companionship, physical touch, and routine, all of which contribute to the emotional health.

Unfortunately, the protectors of our well-being are often deemed a problem. All the while, the real threats—like a damp, mouldy house—are downplayed or ignored entirely. Meanwhile, legislation mostly favours landlords and real estate agencies, providing little protective measures for the rest of us.

The time has come for a change.

We are requesting the local government to pass legislation that prohibits landlords from denying tenants the right to own pets in residential rental properties. We believe this will be a significant step towards achieving balance between tenant's rights and landlord's interests. We also call for stricter regulations to ensure landlords fulfill their obligations, creating a healthier living environment for all.

Join us in our fight to live in homes that value our well-being more than carpets and furniture. Your support can make a difference. Please sign our petition.
