As a lifelong lover of the Olympic Games, I have been shocked and disappointed by the experiences I and many others have had during the recent Olympics held in France. There have been multiple instances of cheating and sudden, uncommunicated rule changes that have left athletes confused and frustrated.
Moreover, the quality of life for the athletes, guests, and even the spectators has been severely compromised. The food served is often undercooked, posing a risk to health and safety. Accommodations are below accepted standard levels, and in one incomprehensible case, swimmers were made to compete in sewage-contaminated water.
This fiasco raises serious questions about France's ability to host international events of this magnitude, leaving an impression of sabotage rather than sportsmanship. We need to ensure that the integrity, quality, and fair play found in games of the past are upheld in the future. Banning France from hosting future Olympic Games will send a strong message about the standard we expect from host nations.
