Prohibit Data Centers Near Residential Areas in Prince William County, VA
The Issue
The rapid expansion of data centers in Prince William County, Virginia is a growing concern for residents. These facilities, while crucial to the digital economy, can pose significant issues when situated near residential areas. Noise pollution from cooling systems, generators (loud enough to be disturbing up to a quarter of a mile away), and increased traffic due to 24/7 operations are just some of the problems faced by residents living nearby. Most importantly, studies show increased anxiety and insomnia for nearby neighborhoods due to the noise and electromagnetic fields produced by the data centers.
Moreover, data centers consume vast amounts of energy which can strain local power grids and contribute to environmental degradation. According to a report by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), data centers in the U.S consumed about 70 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2014 - equivalent to the annual output of 34 large (500-megawatt) coal-fired power plants. This consumption is expected to increase with more data centers being built.
We believe that it's necessary for our county officials to establish regulations prohibiting the construction of new data centers near residential areas. We urge them not only consider economic growth but also prioritize the quality of life and environmental sustainability.
