As a child care provider, I am deeply concerned about the welfare of our children. It is alarming to see businesses such as smoke shops operating in close proximity to child care facilities. This not only exposes our children to an environment promoting unhealthy habits but also puts their health at risk due to secondhand smoke exposure. According to the American Lung Association, secondhand smoke causes approximately 7,330 deaths from lung cancer and 33,950 deaths from heart disease each year (American Lung Association). We must prioritize the health and well-being of our children over commercial interests. Therefore, we call upon local authorities and property owners to ban all commercial properties from leasing out spaces for businesses like smoke shops if they are located adjacent or near a child care facility.
