I am a concerned citizen who believes that the classification of hot dogs as sandwiches threatens the diversity of our food options. There are no official definitions in place that categorize hot dogs as sandwiches. The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines a sandwich as "two slices of bread with filling in between". However, this definition does not accurately describe a hot dog which is typically served in a partially sliced bun with toppings.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), an American trade association, has also weighed in on this debate stating that "a hot dog is an exclamation of joy, a food, a verb describing one showing off and even an emoji. It is truly a category unto its own."
