The issue

Like countless others, I've spent my formative years swimming and snorkeling in the breathtaking waters of the Clovelly marine sanctuary. Nestled in the heart of Clovelly, NSW, Australia, this iconic marine sanctuary has turned into my second home. I dive here almost daily, and my acquaintance with "Scrappy", the most loved blue groper, spans decades. Amidst the tranquillity of these azure waters, I begun my own small initiative of collecting rubbish during my dives. Unfortunately, discarded fishing line and lead sinkers have been the most common refuse I've found so far.

Clovelly marine sanctuary became a protected zone after the tragic death of "Bluey", another beloved blue groper. Spearfishing was immediately banned in the wake of this incident. However, line fishing is yet to be prohibited. What disturbs me the most is the sight of innocent aquatic species ensnared in the fishing lines and fellow divers being inflicted with injuries by hooks and lures on the stairs upon entry and exit. We've already lost "Bluey". I cannot bear to see "Scrappy" or indeed any other creatures suffer the same fate.

It's time we expanded the protective measures in place to guard our marine wildlife. I am therefore calling for a blanket ban on fishing by all methods in Clovelly marine sanctuary and its surrounding areas. This will not only safeguard our aquatic friends but also enhance the safety of swimmers and divers who frequent this location.

Please stand with me in this fight for wildlife conservation and public safety. Your signature can make a world of difference to the creatures of Clovelly marine sanctuary.
