Cancel Classes in Order to Participate in the 2020 Election

The Issue

Professors at Georgetown University should make an effort to reduce the work load and class attendance requirement on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 so that students have fewer obstacles to participate in the 2020 election. Polling sites always need more volunteers to work, and with all indicators pointing toward COVID-19 still being an obstacle by November, in-person voting will take longer as safety precautions are put in place. Additionally, BIPOC communities are disproportionately affected by voter disenfranchisement, longer voting lines, and negative health outcomes from COVID-19. With these concerns and barriers already associated with the voting process, students should not be required to pick and choose how to invest their energy between the concerns of school and the political implications of their actions on the most important day of the year. If Georgetown is serious about taking advantage of the political engagement offered by its location in DC and upholding the Jesuit values of people for others and faith that does justice, it will take action in allowing students, especially in this unique time we find ourselves in, to do all that is possible to participate in the 2020 election.
