The Issue

We the Students of The University of Glasgow, put forth the following demands to express our concern about the current strike conditions.

The UCU and its members (our educators and support staff) are striking against their:

  • unfair working conditions
    - loss of tenure, temporary contracts, questionable pay gaps, insurmountable work loads, heavy stress, decreases in pay

  • & loss of pension stability
pensions are now being floated on the stock market

These are fair reasons to protest, and our educators should be respected in their decision to stand up to mismanagement and unfair treatment.

After all, teaching conditions are learning conditions (Thank you GSA).

If these strikes last the duration - our 2019/2020 academic year will have been directly affected by a total of 6 weeks of strike action. This year there are only 23 weeks of teaching. That means we will have received only 74% of our promised contracted teaching time. This will incur severe damage to our education. Including but not limited to, a loss of lectures and seminars, and the irreplaceable availability of our tutors and lecturers; who are meant to be there to support us in preparation for upcoming exams and essays.

It is our right, and the aim of this petition, to demand compensation from the University of Glasgow for failure to deliver goods due and disruption of our education.

74% of an academic year deserves 74% of tuition paid.

*Note: Educators will not be paid for time missed during the strike.

The University can meet our demands by:

1. Negotiating fairly with the UCU and its members to end the strike now.
OR
2. Compensating students.

Signees, I urge you to:

  • contact our Universities Vice Chancellor & voice your worries,
    *Anton Muscatelli via email, principal@glasgow.ac.uk
  • sign this petition
  • further educate yourself about this strike - see links below.

This is a nationwide* movement that is quickly gaining momentum. Upon singing this petition not only are you standing in solidarity against the disruption of education for students, but also offering support to our educators/staff against the unjust management and coporatisation of education.
*please do sign the nationwide petition as well.

Do not hesitate to leave your comments and ideas.
