Greetings to all Underwood Bushland Friends and Supporters
The 20 year campaign to save the bushland contiunes unabated and UWA remains transfixed in going ahead with its proposed housing development. The VC Dawn Freshwater shows no signs of hearing public demands to change course and is committed to going ahead with the development. We are hopeful and optimistic with the Dec 17 appointment of the new Chancellor, Robert French that commonsense will prevail and the bushland will ultimately be preserved.
UWA currently has no State or Federal Planning environmental approvals in place. As the years pass the environmental arguments in favor of preserving the bushland increase. The Conservation Status of the Black Cockatoos, the Banksia Woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain and most recently the tuart forests will make it very difficult for UWA to proceed with its housing proposal. The Federal Government is currently assessing the tuart forests as a Threatened Ecological Community. Underwood bushland has significant numbers of tuart trees. We also have a State Labor Government which in principal is more sympathetic to the environment.
FUAB will be holding its AGM and a talk by our wonderful Convenor and photographer, Margaret Owen on Saturday 24th Nov at Grace Vaughan House in Shenton Park, 2-4 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. A campaign update will also be provided.
On 2nd February 2019, FUAB will be holding a Public Workshop aimed at developing a Conservation Vision for the Bushland and its importance within the context of Greening of the Western suburbs. More details will be provided down the track. We hope to get a big turnout.
