Thanks to everyone who has signed so far - please keep on sharing the petition link as widely as possible.
We need to inform people of this short-sighted move. Ulster University's plans will do immense damage to the Northern Irish economy in the pursuit of total savings of less than £8 million.
And the statistics prove it. Just look at the World Bank's table of the world's largest economies.
China is the world's second-largest economy. It is likely to overtake the United States as the biggest economy at some stage during this century.
Ulster University is the only place in Northern Ireland where Chinese is taught in a university setting. Closing the school which teaches it reduces Northern Ireland's chances of attracting foreign investment from that nation.
Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy. It is known for its high technology industries, meaning that foreign direct investment from German companies tends to lead to skilled employment.
Ulster University is the only place in Northern Ireland where German is taught in a university setting. Closing the school which teaches it reduces Northern Ireland's chances of attracting foreign investment from that nation.
We also shouldn't forget French - France is the world's sixth largest economy. If Modern Languages is shut, the number of university places for French in Northern Ireland will be halved.
So please tell people about the situation, get them to sign the petition and show their opposition to the Ulster University's shortsightedness.
Jim
