Supporters are signing the petition every day. Thank you all for your support! We have letters going out to some of the major sponsors of Proctors. The goal is to bring awareness that this movie is very harmful, and is not appropriate for a family oriented theater like Proctors Theater. We hope that if we can get at least 1 or 2 sponsors to disapprove showing this on the basis that it goes against racial equality in an extreme way, maybe the other sponsors will follow. We are also planning on protesting on the day of its showing. Since the showing times are at 3:00PM and 7:00PM, protestors should arrive at 2:15 and 6:15 respectively. We are working on getting a local chapter of the NAACP on board to support this cause, so stay tuned! It is a big mistake to suggest that The Birth of a Nation film is "just like" other movies that show a race of people in a negative light. This would be a big understatement. This movie is being used to inspire and recruit terrorists into the KKK organization. Here are some facts about this movie that sets it apart from "other Hollywood movies" - When the film was first shown in 1915, riots broke out in Boston, Philadelphia and other major cities. The cities of Chicago; Denver; Kansas City, Missouri; Minneapolis; Pittsburgh; and St. Louis, Missouri, refused to allow the film to open. The film’s inflammatory character was a catalyst for gangs of whites to attack blacks. In Lafayette, Indiana, after seeing the film, a white man murdered a black teenager. Famous critic Roger Ebert praised the film. He said: “The Birth of a Nation is not a bad film because it argues for evil. Like Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will, it is a great film that argues for evil. To understand how it does so is to learn a great deal about film, and even something about evil." The movie, Triumph of the Will that Roger Ebert was referring to was a film produced for Nazi propaganda to inspire the Nazi's to continue their extermination of the Jewish people. As a matter of fact, Hitler himself is listed as the executive producer of Triumph of the Will. I'm pretty sure that if this movie was showing at Proctors, there would be members of the Jewish community who would oppose it because of what it represented to their people. Some people have questioned whether petitioning Proctors Theater to not show this movie is a form of censorship. I don't believe censorship is justified in all cases. Some say that censorship is like the caging of a bird. However, I believe that sometimes, censorship IS justified. This movie is being shown at a place where kids-movies and other families go for entertainment. It is an evil movie that promotes violence against people purely based on race. It is a movie that is used for recruitment into America's first terrorist organization. It inspires a deep sense of hate. We need 100 digitally signed petitions so a letter can go out to the CEO of Proctors Theaters. Please talk about this petition with people you know, and ask them to sign the petition.
