S8837 (207-c probation disability benefits) is on the Senate Floor Calendar. Please email the below text to Rep. Pretlow's legislative head, William Campbell, at campbellw@nyassembly.gov. Rep. Pretlow is the person in charge of the Ways and Means Committee, where the legislation is stuck. LET'S FLOOD HIS MAILBOX THIS WEEKEND! The email: SUBJECT: Please pass 2025-A2535 NOW TEXT: With S8837 (probation disability benefits) now on the floor calendar in the Senate, we implore the Assembly Ways and Means Committee to please advance A2535. As previously mentioned, probation officers do very similar work as parole officers do, and parole has 207-c-like benefits in its contract with NYS. Also, with the passing of bail reform, something that Democrats spearheaded, you must understand that probation officers are the ones supervising many of those who are no longer being placed into custody due to the change in the law. Many arrested individuals are released under supervision - and probation officers are tasked with the supervision part. Probation officers deserve the same types of benefits, which already are granted to other peace officers as ESSENTIAL - not "entitlement" as we've heard some legislators feel. Since December 2024, we have pointed out so many factors that make passing changes to General Municipal Law 207-c the only fair way to fully protect probation officers - who are out there every day alongside their peace officer colleagues protecting our communities. To recap, probation officers: - perform similar duties as police officers - perform very similar duties as parole officers - supervise many individuals who are released after an arrest in compliance with bail reform - work with increasingly violent offenders, including those arrested for/convicted of sex offenses, violent assaults, weapon possession, drug possession, etc. - work with those who are gang-affiliated - work with domestic violence offenders - encounter anti-police sentiment within the community - have experienced incidents in which they are injured by a probationer - perform home visits during which officers do not know what they will encounter - are increasingly exposed to the risks of fentanyl and other dangerous narcotics in our communities Thank you, Name ________ City of Residence ____
