SUBJECT: Please protect probation officers during THIS SESSION
TEXT: With the state budget being finalized, we ask that you please consider encouraging the Assembly Ways & Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee to put A2535/S8837 to a vote. This legislation would help probation officers across NYS to obtain full disability benefits when hurt in the line of duty. Many people do not know that probation officers are sworn peace officers whose work is similar to that of NYS parole officers. Substantial differences include that probation officers are county-level and supervise people --in lieu of or before-- people are incarcerated. Parole does not fall under 207-c because that law applies to municipalities. However, we recently learned that parole officers have 207-c-like benefits in their contract with NYS. Probation officers deserve the same type of benefits. This is not "entitlement legislation," -- as we've heard some call it -- it's protection that already is granted to many peace officers as essential! Thank you,
