Pro Athletes, Teams & Leagues - Stop posting on X
The Issue
X (formerly known as Twitter) is a place where racism, bigotry, and hate is amplified and promoted by the current owner, Elon Musk. He does nothing to prevent these hateful messages being pushed out by users of X and in fact he often promotes them. His actions - as well as actions by others - are causing serious issues in communities around the world.
For the sake of decency and respect for everyone; professional athletes, their teams, and the leagues should stop posting content on the platform.
Sports are incredibly important in the US, Canadian, and Global cultures which means they can influence the world in a significantly positive way. An amazing aspect of being part of a team is that they are a model of diversity and help build camaraderie and understanding. Because they foster acceptance, they have the power to completely alter the negative dynamics resulting from the harmful behavior on X. It's time for the leagues and their teams to take action that honors their commitment to inclusion and equity.
It’s time the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLS, NWSL, MLB, and NHL have an Xodus from the platform.
There has been a significant decline in users on X. If the 179 teams from the seven major professional leagues stopped providing invaluable content to the platform for free they could help create a much more positive environment for communities - small and large - around the world.
The time between the first week of the NFL season and the end of the World Series is the height of professional sports in the US. The four largest leagues are in action making this an ideal time to act and for them to move their content to an alternative platform. If they lead, tens of millions of fans will follow.
The shift in the conversation happening online would be monumental and noticeable immediately. This action would be extremely powerful.
When a physical location like Nick’s in Sticks is embroiled in a controversy due to their hateful, racist words, there are immediate consequences for that business. We should not treat the owner of X or his platform differently. These online communities are as real and as impactful as our in-person spaces. Because of this, the best way to shift the behavior online is for them to suffer similar consequences for their repulsive actions.
