The issue

I and many others who swim and visit the Hastings Pool precinct are in shock! We have been visiting this precinct for over 40 years (as children, parents, and with our grandchildren and friends). With no consultation, a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to develop a "Wellness Centre" on the iconic Hastings pool and picnic area has been put out to the private sector. The pool and picnic area is nearing 100 years of use by community and broader public (approx. 60,000 visitations/year currently). Confidentiality of the EOI process disallows consultation and collaboration with the community, its values, history and cultural significance. In the spirit of collaboration outlined in the PWS State Reserve Code of Practice, we, the Far South Community, request that the following considerations be made as part of the EOI process and that the Code is followed:

1.     Access to the pool and picnic area remain open to the general public at all times

2.     As per the Code, a (Karstland) Management Plan for the “precinct” be developed prior to any planned development, and be made publicly available

3.     The $3m allocated to the precinct, be returned to its budget

4.     Several members of the community be included in any committee or panel set up to oversee the project

5.     The Chalet (which has its own cultural significance) be allocated for indigenous cultural practices, educational, art and literary projects that have been held here in the past.
