Privacy and Safety shouldn’t depend on your Zip Code…

The Issue

Wyoming residents deserve the basic dignity of privacy in their own homes.
Right now, Wyoming is one of the few states in the country with no law requiring landlords to give tenants advance notice before entering their home.

That means a landlord can legally enter without warning unless the lease happens to specify otherwise and many leases don’t.

This lack of protection leaves tenants vulnerable to surprise entries, intimidation, retaliation, and violations of personal privacy. A person’s home should be a safe place, not a space where someone can walk in at any time without notice.

Most states require at least 24 hours’ notice. Wyoming requires none.
Across the U.S., a 24‑hour notice standard is widely recognized as fair, reasonable, and respectful. It protects tenants while still allowing landlords access for repairs, inspections, and emergencies. Wyoming’s current approach relies on vague “reasonable notice” expectations under common law, which are inconsistent and difficult to enforce.

We are calling on the Wyoming Legislature to fix this.

We, the undersigned, urge the Wyoming Legislature to:

• Amend the Wyoming Residential Rental Property Act

• Require landlords to provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice before entering a tenant’s home

• Allow exceptions only for true emergencies

• Require notice to be given in writing, text, email, or verbal communication that can be reasonably verified

This simple, common‑sense reform would:

• Protect tenant privacy

• Reduce conflict between landlords and tenants

• Create clear expectations for both parties

• Bring Wyoming in line with national standards

• Ensure that no tenant feels unsafe or violated in their own home

Everyone deserves to feel secure where they live.

A 24‑hour notice requirement is not burdensome. It’s basic respect. Wyoming families, workers, students, and seniors should not have to fear unexpected entries into their private living space.
