Prioritize the Six Mile Creek Trail

Prioritize the Six Mile Creek Trail
The Issue
We, those signed below, are local residents who are bicyclists, walkers and individuals dedicated to the idea that a good trails and greenway system is an enormous community asset for all.
We therefore urge that the Six Mile Creek Trail, using the flood easement of Trier Ditch, be made a top priority for completion.
As can be seen on the current trails map, this quadrant of the county is greatly lacking.
It is well documented that trails have a positive economic effect, which is most deeply needed here.
By connecting areas, trails build and encourage a sense of community.
The availability of trails as an incentive for exercise, leading to better health, is badly needed, especially in this area.
The completion of this trail will create a 26 mile bikeable loop creating a regional draw for visitors.
This plan has been on the books for over 20 years.
Beautiful greenways have been built in more affluent areas west and north during this time period after less waiting.
In the interests of equity and social justice it is time to get this done with equal quality; a trail greenway, not roadside lanes or bikeways.
If the trail cannot follow Trier Creek all the way, it should be designed to run through the County owned acres on Paulding Road.
We have no objection to the horse trails planned there, but it is unjust and discriminatory that a privileged special interest group be given use of that area while ordinary local residents are not.
Since $27.5 million in Federal money has been allocated for the new jail, freeing up additional funds, we strongly recommend that a portion of the newly freed funds be used to build the trail.
