Prioritize Seniors' Open Fitness During Summer at Snohomish Aquatic Center

Prioritize Seniors' Open Fitness During Summer at Snohomish Aquatic Center
The Issue
The Snohomish Aquatic Center is cutting back the Open Fitness hours, inclusive of water AND river walking, from the current 91.5 TO 31.5 hours starting Monday, June 24. This change is said to be in effect through ~Labor Day.
SUMMER “OPEN FITNESS” SCHEDULE:
Water Walking
M/W/F: 5:30-8:00AM, 8:00-9:00PM
T/TH: 5:30-7:00AM, 7:30-9:00PM
SAT: 7:00-7:50AM
SUN: 7:00-9:00AM
River Walking
M-F: 5:30-9:00AM, 12:00-1:00PM
M/W: 7:00-9:00PM
T/TH: 7:30-9:00PM
FRI: 8:00-9:00PM
SAT: 7:00-7:50AM
SUN: 7:00-9:00AM
Thereby, the water walking is now limited to early morning and late evening hours only. I have talked with many who say they cannot do the river, and the deep lap pool isn’t feasible. I also know that not everyone can afford to take the classes, nor should we have to. With this insufficient availability over the summer, the regular paying members are left with few to no options.
This is NOT a reasonable accommodation during the summer for the most dedicated patrons of the pool — the disabled and senior citizens.
Water activity is beneficial for seniors, offering low-impact cardiovascular health benefits, along with improved flexibility and muscle strength. Yet, our local aquatic center fails to accommodate adequate water walking hours for seniors. This oversight compromises the health and wellness of older adults in our community, making it difficult for them to stay active and engaged.
Understandably, the summer months allocate more time for open swim/lessons. I, too, agree that youth swim time is a priority. Our ask to management is that they reassess the class schedules. Perhaps allow the pool to be shared during the classes; or alternate the class schedule so water walking isn’t limited to the same early morning/late night times every day.
Let's urge the Snohomish Aquatic Center management to prioritize an accessible and dedicated “open fitness” schedule for the disabled and senior citizens.
