The General Dental Council have published a report on deaths during FtP investigation during the period from 2019 - 2022

During this period, 20 dental professionals died while their cases were active, with causes of death categorised as natural, external, or unspecified, and one subcategory of suicide.

The report has included 7 - 10 deaths in the subcategory of suicide when “suicide” was listed on the death certificate or notification.

The report goes on to state clear steps to understand this issue:

  1. Piloting the use of initial inquiries to enable the assessment of clinical practice
concerns earlier in the process and improve timeliness7
  2. Reviewing our processes where there are sexual misconduct allegations and
identifying opportunities for reducing impact on participants in such cases
  3. Continuing to explore, understand and evaluate the experiences of those who have participated in an investigation over the last two years through research commissioned from the University of Manchester and Newcastle University.
  4. Reviewing decision-making guidance to improve proportionality, fairness and consistency in fitness to practise outcomes. The consultation on guidance for practice committees was issued in September, and guidance for the Interim Orders Committee was published last year

These are important steps when an organisation is serious about safeguarding its registrants - so why have the NMC not done the same?
