Dear supporters, friends, neighbours,
Thanks to your voices, our community is rallying around a hopeful, practical solution to Squamish’s housing crisis. At DWIFT Housing Society, we’ve proposed a powerful partnership with the District of Squamish (DOS) for a piece of land at 1221 Pioneer Way—and we believe it’s a chance to show what’s possible when we think differently, and act together.
Here’s the opportunity: by working with DWIFT, the District can double the number of affordable homes created.
If we’re overlooked, that opportunity disappears—and Squamish will be left with half the impact we could achieve.
💡 Partner 1: DWIFT Housing Society = Affordable Ownership
On just one acre, we can create 30–50 permanently affordable homes for ownership—a housing option that doesn’t currently exist in Squamish. Built at cost, stewarded for community, and protected for future generations, these homes would give working families a foothold they’ve long been denied.
💡 Partner 2: Squamish Community Housing Society + Market Developer = Affordable Rentals
The remainder of the site will likely be sold to a market developer, who will be required to provide below-market rental units under the District’s inclusionary zoning policy. These rental homes would be stewarded by Squamish Community Housing Society, a trusted local non-profit ensuring long-term affordability and good governance.
🏠 Together, these two partnerships—DWIFT and SCHS—can deliver both affordable home ownership and rental, expanding access across the housing continuum while keeping affordability in community hands. This approach increases the total number of affordable units and delivers deeper community benefit—without costing the District any additional land sale revenue.
But if the District sells the entire site to a private developer, the number of affordable homes will likely remain within the usual 10–15% target range. A partnership with DWIFT can help Squamish reach higher.
This is a moment to act. We’ve been waiting six months for a response to our proposal. Your support—by signing, sharing, and speaking up—is what makes it harder for the District to let this opportunity slip away.
Let’s keep growing this movement. Let’s keep showing that Squamish believes in creative, community-led solutions.
Because we’re not just building homes—we’re building a future where everyone belongs.
With gratitude,
Sean and the DWIFT Team
