Petition updatePrioritize Affordable Housing in SquamishUPDATE: Squamish Is Paying More Than Almost Anywhere in B.C. – But Getting Less

Big news — and a big concern for our community
The District of Squamish (DOS) has announced the sale of 8.5 acres of public land in the Business Park to Solterra for $13.27M.

We're being told by the DOS that this is in line with the master real-estate plan to help pay for community facilities and infrastructure, yet we still don't have either. This plan is not working and it is time to reevaluate our strategy.

Here’s the problem:

Squamish now has the SECOND-HIGHEST cost of living in B.C. Only Whistler is more expensive.

And despite that, we still don’t have: modern recreation centres, adequate community hubs, enough childcare spaces, updated facilities and infrastructure to keep pace with growth, and definitely not enough affordable housing.

We pay more than almost anywhere — and we’re getting less than we should.

Land sales aren’t solving the problem. For over a decade, the District has sold public land to fund projects. But we are still behind.

  • The Public Works Yard has ballooned from $26M to $37M+
  • This new land sale barely covers the overrun on that one project
  • Facilities remain outdated
  • Debt continues to rise
  • Community needs go unmet

If selling land worked, we’d see the results. We don’t.

It’s time for a new direction
Residents want:

1. Better project management
Cost overruns shouldn’t be fixed by selling land we can never get back.

2. Strategies based on actual community needs
Plans should start with resident priorities — not end with them.

3. Results measured by real outcomes
Are public services improving? Are facilities keeping up? Are residents better off?

4. A pause on further public land sales
Until we reassess the real impacts of this strategy.

5. A stronger voice for residents
More listening, more transparency, more community involvement in shaping priorities.

We’re not just complaining — we’re organizing
People across Squamish are stepping up because they want to build a town that works for everyone. We’re not waiting for perfect government; we’re building community power and helping shape the change we need.

This petition is the first step.
