As a student at Senn High School in 2020, I've experienced first hand how draining it is to attend online classes for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. I'm deeply concerned for both students' and teachers' mental and physical health. I, as well as many other students I've talked to have already been getting headaches, sore necks and backs, and strained eyes every single day. Mentally, we feel exhausted, unmotivated, and isolated. Many students including myself struggle with mental health issues, causing us to be even more overwhelmed. I understand remote learning is new for everyone, and it wasn't Senn's idea, however, many other high schools are doing half day remote learning, which I think is much more reasonable.I and many other students I've interviewed don't feel that our well being as individuals and students is in CPS's best interest. This is because staring at a screen for 7+ hours (homework usually adds 2 hours on average according to Senn students I've interviewed) is scientifically proven to increase risk of damaging eye sight, increasing headaches, causing moodiness, lack of motivation, and overall damage to mental and physical health, and health care professionals urge people not be have a screen time of over 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day, on average. I learned and researched this from Harvard Medical School website: https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/electronic-screen-alert-avoid-this-vision-risk

I think if we are to continue to do 7 hour long remote learning days 5 days a week, we should not have homework, and we should only be assigned work we can finish in class. Many of us have jobs, responsibilities at home, goals and passions we now don't have time and are too tired for. I'm 17 and I want to learn, but at the same time, I should be having fun. I should have time for my passions. I want to be able to have a job. But I currently don't have time when I have to spend 7+ hours in front of a computer. I don't want to have headaches everyday while my mental health declines. I'm asking Senn students who agree with me to sign this petition for the sake of both teachers and students health. I'm asking Senn High School and staff members to please consider my concerns and wishes, and thank you for reading.
