B.W to be Expelled and Enforce the Hate Speech Policy at Oregon High School.
The Issue
Recently, social media posts/messages made by an Oregon High School student (who will be referred to as B.W.) were exposed among the student body and the community. Racial slurs and telling students of color to die were the central theme of these messages. Students are upset about this and parents are as well. It's a very crucial time in society with the Black Lives Matter movement. This ongoing Racism situation at Oregon High School is disturbing and unacceptable. The Black Lives Matter movement is not political, It is a basic human right. The school should have a Zero Tolerance Policy for Cyber bullying, Bullying and Hate Speech towards other students. This has been an ongoing issue in all Oregon Schools. Action needs to be taken by Oregon High School Principals and the Oregon Police Department to give B.W the proper consequences for her actions of Racism, Hate Speech and Cyber Bullying. This has been an extremely common issue in the Oregon School District and serious actions and consequences need to be given when it is taken this far.
We, the students of Oregon High School, call for the immediate expulsion of B.W, and full and complete enforcement of the Oregon School District Hate Speech Policy.
The Social Media Posts included student B.W saying these things:
- Holding up her middle finger saying "Fuck black people"
- "ni***rs should die" both in a group chat and separately to an individual
This is what the Oregon School District Hate Speech Policy says: The Oregon School District is committed to providing a safe, secure and respectful learning environment for all students in school buildings, on school grounds and school buses, and at school-sponsored activities. Hate speech has a harmful social, physical, psychological and academic impact on our school community. The District will not tolerate any form of hate speech, and will consistently and vigorously seek to eliminate it. As such, the Oregon School District Board of Education has adopted a specific Anti-Hate Speech Policy.
