Introduced on July 19 in the Lok Sabha, the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 seeks to allow illegal migrants from certain minority communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for Indian citizenship. In other words, it amends the Citizenship Act of 1955.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to allow illegal migrants belonging to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian religious communities coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan to not be imprisoned or deported.
It also appeals for the minimum years of residency in India to apply for citizenship to be lessened from at least 11 to six years for such migrants. However this bill excludes some other minority communities based on their religion.
An illegal immigrant should not be allowed to settle in the country based on their religion. For a nation already laden with population beyond its carrying capacity, this bill will be a self-destructing one which will lead to more communal as well as religious conflicts. Further this will, in due course of time, result in conflicts and competition for already scarce resource based of the nation, thus increasing vulnerability of the nations indigenous population.Eventually, their will be changes in the countries demographic pattern, socio-economic condition as well as the age old cultural diversity and harmony of the nation will be lost forever.
As a citizen of the state that has been under the negative impact of illegal immigration for decades, it is our responsibility to oppose such a harmful attempt to legalize illegal immigrants.
So, I request all of you to sign this petition and raise your voices against the bill.
