Why this petition matters

The fight to close the Canidrome, the world’s deadliest dog track, continues! The Macau Canidrome is China’s only legal dog track and thousands of innocent Australian greyhounds have been sent there to be used and killed since 1963.

Thankfully, the export of greyhounds to Macau was suspended in December when Australian airlines Qantas and Cathay Pacific refused to fly any more greyhounds to the region. No greyhounds had been sent to the Canidrome since that time.  Until now.

Sadly, three greyhounds arrived in Hong Kong for transfer to Macau on March 16.  Six more came packed in shipping crates on April 15.  These are Irish dogs, the latest in a long line of four-legged victims who will soon die at a true slaughterhouse for greyhounds.

The Macau Canidrome greyhound track is a place where no dog gets out alive. Previously, hundreds of dogs were imported from Australia each year, killed at a rate of thirty per month. There is no adoption program and only one dog, a greyhound named Brooklyn photographed by GREY2K USA Worldwide in 2011, is reportedly being kept alive to avoid public outcry.

We must now work harder than ever to stop this cruelty with new victims from Ireland!

In 2012, the Irish Department of Agriculture issued a policy against racing dog exports to Asian countries and emphatically stated that the plan offered by the Irish Greyhound Board or Bord na gCon “...does not provide sufficient assurance that adequate provision would be made to safeguard the health and welfare of greyhounds in China at the end of their racing life." Meanwhile, gambling revenues have declined by more than 60% since 2010 so the conditions under which greyhounds live at the Canidrome have only deteriorated.

Now is the time to remind the Irish government that its policy should be strictly enforced and in fact that commercial greyhound racing should be banned as a matter of law.

Please sign the petition, the innocent greyhounds of Ireland are counting on us to act now!
