Momentum continues to build rapidly, with friends and family of the deceased woman, as well as advocacy and rights groups, and reputable lawyers all calling for an independent inquiry.
The parents of the deceased woman (they have asked that her name not be published) who accused the AG of rape released a statement via their lawyer which read in part:
"The family of the deceased continue to experience considerable grief arising from their loss,"
"They are supportive of any inquiry which would potentially shed light on the circumstance surrounding the deceased's passing.
"They ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."
And SMH reported that a number of longtime friends including all her fellow members and coach of the South Australian school debating team of 1988 have come out in support of an inquiry.
On Friday the Human Rights Law Centre released a statement calling for “a proper, fair, prompt and independent inquiry into the allegations against the Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter”
The Australian Women Lawyers (AWL) also backed the call for an urgent independent investigation into the allegations.
The President Leah Marrone commented “Until such investigation is conducted, the question remains as to whether the Attorney is an appropriately fit and proper person to hold that office. This uncertainty undermines the credibility and operation of the Australian legal system given the community’s expectations of the legal profession and the Attorney’s role in upholding the rule of law.”
Finally, the eminent legal scholar Kim Rubinstein wrote persuasively inr the Guardian arguing that the ‘rule of law’ far from being at risk from such an inquiry, is actually strengthened
“With the very person responsible for the law’s administration facing serious allegations, an inquiry must be held as soon as possible…” (Click to read more)
So as you can see, whether looking from a legal viewpoint, from a human rights perspective, or just as a matter of common decency and fairness, an independent inquiry into these serious allegations is essential.
