Today the #ActionForAfghanistan campaign is joining a two day global campaign to raise awareness of the forced displacement, targeted killings, and ongoing persecution of the Hazara people in Afghanistan.
Can you join this global campaign by sharing an important message on Twitter?
It has now been two months since Kabul fell to the Taliban. In this time, we’ve seen deadly attacks targeting the Shia minority including an attack last Friday on a Shia Mosque in Kandahar city, killing at least 70 people and wounding scores of others.
It’s been heart wrenching watching our brothers and sisters being persecuted, killed, and displaced from their homes and land. That’s why we need your help.
The growing number of attacks by the Taliban demonstrate a deeply-worrying and dramatic escalation of violence against Hazara people, who have long been targets of sectarian violence, systemic discrimination, and persecution in Afghanistan.
Amnesty International recently released reports documenting that mistreatment, displacement, violence and massacres of the Hazaras are becoming commonplace. The Hazara community has never known safety while the Taliban have been in power.
Despite the ongoing and acute dangers faced by the Hazara people, the international community including the Australian Government has been largely silent.
We’ve seen that international pressure has worked with the Taliban already. After much global pressure from the diaspora and international community, in the Daikundi province, where thousands of Hazaras were displaced by the former Taliban governor, some displaced communities have been told to go back to their homes, though many have not, as they remain fearful. The governor has since been replaced.
The Taliban are craving global legitimacy and trust at this critical time. That’s why the international community can’t turn a blind eye now.
Help us keep the pressure up as part of this global campaign. We hope you can join us as part of this global campaign kicking off today.
Yours in hope,
Sitarah Mohammadi and Sajjad Askary
