Hasnaa Namooya started this petition to Prime minister of Mauritius

To the Honorable Prime Minister

We are writing to inform you that, we, the self-employed, whether formal or informal, are facing many issues due to the lockdown enforced by the government. We understand that you do not have any other choice due to the pandemy prevailing worldwide and that for the good health of our population, most businesses are closed and unable to operate to prevent further propagation of the virus.

We are grateful that so far, you have acknowledged our existence in the country and provided a sum rs5100 for our basic needs for a period one month. However, this amount is only half of the minimum salary prescribed by your government. Most self-employed, particularly those in the informal sector, do not own a house and pay rent. Rent is not exempted and we understand that we need to pay our landlords as the latter themselves might be surviving on the rent money.  The amount of rs5100 might not be enough to even afford rent for some families. Moreover, with almost no money left, some people are unable to afford food. Besides, the price of food items has become exorbitant and unaffordable for many.

In addition, most probably, due to the economic situation of the country, many of these self-employed will no longer be having enough work to be able to survive. Small businesses will close down without the  help of the government.

We would appreciate if the government can provide more financial help to the self employed and small businesses during the lockdown. We are unable to work due to lockdown. Please include strong measures in the next budget to ensure our survival in this difficult time.

Thank you once again for having recognised the difficulty of the self employed and small businesses during this difficult situation. We would appreciate if your government could bring about an organisation to cater for our needs and provide the required help so that we can be recognised as being part of the mauritian economy.  Those who are informal do not mind being asked to be registered. We hope that you will take the necessary measures to preserve our income.

Best Regards

The formal and informal self employed of the Republic of Mauritius

Many people are having to take money from others to survive and have to return this mney sooner or later. We demand that the government give self employed a fixed sum of money as compensation after lockdown so that they can return what they owe!!
