The Issue

The Western Ghats are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are threatened. They are one of the eight hottest hot-spots of biological diversity in the world. Western Ghats are a mountain range that runs parallel to the Western Coast of the Indian peninsula. They cover five percent of India's land and many rivers originate from them. They are home to several endangered and endemic species which are found nowhere else on our planet. There are various wildlife sanctuaries and forest reserves present in the Western Ghats but conserving just few acres of land is not going to help protect the Western Ghats and preserve it for our future generations. An effort by the Indian Government and United Nations is necessary to make sure this priceless piece of nature remains for the good of every single human being on this planet.

They are now threatened by logging, converting forest into agricultural land, livestock gazing, construction of reservoirs and roads. Habitat destruction, wildlife poaching and human-wildlife conflict are also rampant. India has existing policies on wildlife protection and preservation, but that has not helped to save the Western Ghats from destruction nor stop any encroachment by land mafia's.This nature's wonder also consists 325 of globally threatened species.

This petition is not against any country or any present laws, but it is made to make sure, even after a 1000 years nature remains protected for the benefit of our future generations. It may take some time for this law to come into affect, but one thing assured - it is for good, not just the people living around the Western Ghats, but every single living being on this magical planet. Nature is protected in a highly secure manner in most of the developed countries, it is not protected from nature itself, it is protected from us humans, the only way it will degrade non naturally is by human hands. And that is exactly why we need to make laws to protect and preserve in the most secure way possible. Now you will be thinking, the Western Ghats ain't one piece of land to protect, Well it is not, but it is possible to protect it. There are 100's of examples of protected lands in the United States. Giving an example:- With broad collaboration and a sound, science-based conservation plan, Arizona Land and Water Trust has protected over 39,000 acres of southern Arizona’s finest parkland, streams, and working farms and ranches since 1978. And when they say protected, they mean it. So why not we make this true for the Western Ghats? Live and let live !
