GOVERNMENT OF BARBADOS: LEGISLATE PARKING FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN BARBADOS

The Issue

The following petition calls on the Government of Barbados as follows:

Amendment to the Road Traffic Act of Barbados

Whereas the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was signed and ratified by the Government of Barbados on 19 July 2007 and on 27 February 2013 respectively, signifying the Government of Barbados’s commitment to ensure that the rights of all Persons with Disabilities are adhered to and recognized by law.

Be it resolved that on behalf 0f all Persons with Disabilities, in the interest of sustained inclusion, accessibility, and development of the wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities we hereby call on the Government of Barbados to lay before Parliament the Amendments to Road Traffic Act, Cap 295 to provide:

 a) “Disabled Parking” spaces with access aisles with the International standards that will only allow persons with the appropriate valid Disability Parking Identification to park in these spaces.

 b) Provide ‘cut curbs’ according to international standards where pavements are provided and level entrances to buildings and facilities.

 c) Any person who violates the amendments to the act will be liable to a fine.
