The Issue

Prime Minister Edi Rama must resign.

The Flamingo Revolution has shown that citizens across Albania are demanding accountability over the government’s approval of luxury tourism developments in protected areas, including the Vjosa–Narta site and Sazan Island. What began as an environmental protest has grown into a nationwide movement with a clear, unified demand: the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

According to reporting on the movement, protesters have raised serious concerns about:

  • Environmental damage to protected coastal and river ecosystems, including risks to migratory birds and wildlife in the Vjosa–Narta area.
  • The use of “strategic investor” status to bypass normal public consultation and environmental safeguards.
  • Opaque decision-making, weak transparency, and possible links between the projects, political interests, and allegations involving organized crime and undisclosed ownership structures.
  • Allegations that laws protecting protected areas were weakened or applied inconsistently to favor specific investors.

The  Prime Minister has repeatedly defended the projects and rejected allegations of misconduct, while protesters have called on him to reverse the decisions and resign.

We, the undersigned, call for:

  • The immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
  • The suspension of all work on the Vjosa–Narta and Sazan projects until an independent, transparent review is completed.
  • Full public disclosure of all contracts, approvals, ownership structures, and beneficial owners related to these developments.
  • An independent investigation into whether protected-area laws were improperly weakened or bypassed.
  • Protection of Albania’s natural heritage, including the Vjosa–Narta ecosystem and its wildlife.

Albania is not for sale. Our protected lands, our democracy, and our future cannot be compromised by opaque deals and unchecked power.
